Teaching Methodology

Foundation is most important. From the very beginning her students learn to be organized by keeping all of their flute material together. Each week their assignment is clearly written down and usually includes scales, a rhythm exercise, etude, solo piece and duet. This method fosters great study habits that students carry into their academic subjects as well.

Emphasized are correct breath control, fingerings, dynamics and rhythm. Master classes help to encourage daily practicing as her students perform every other month in a workshop.

In addition to providing flute instruction, most advanced students are expected to play the piccolo to prepare them for participation in band and orchestra. Introduction to the piccolo happens as soon as the student is ready and shows an interest. Students are also given the opportunity to learn to play on the alto and bass flutes.

Individualized Instruction

Every person learns differently. Individualized instruction is tailored for students to perform at their personal best. Getting to know students well helps to understand and accommodate their learning style, pace and to pick pieces that they will love to practice and enjoy.

Group Classes

As a way of motivating students, Barbara teaches five group classes each school year at her home studio.  This gives students deadlines to prepare their pieces.

Three group classes are flute with piano accompaniment. Pianist Deborah Dewolf Emery accompanies these classes. Ms. Emory is one of the pianists with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and is one of the best accompanists in Boston working with notable musicians and eminent conductors from around the world.

Two group classes are for flute choir. In these chamber music settings Barbara is able to address intonation, the value of counting one’s part, dynamics and musicality. Best of all, everyone has fun with an after event party of food and friendship.

Auditions

In addition to intimate performance classes and flute choir classes, auditions keep students focused and disciplined. The recommended auditions provide opportunities to play in orchestras and bands with other dedicated students. Barbara’s students have played in such ensembles throughout elementary, middle and high school.

Online Teaching

In addition to private lessons in Barbara’s home music studio, online lessons are also available when circumstances require remote learning.
